Simone Biles' gritty performance helps U.S. take lead during Olympic qualifications
Greatness, grit and guts.
These sum up the American women's gymnastics team's performance during the qualification round of the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris the best.Despite multiple periods of uncertainty and doubt, the United States stormed to the top of the standings after section two with over a six point advantage over Italy, led by two Olympic all-around winners, a first in history.
The seven-time Olympic medallist Simone Biles, who took home the gold in the all-around competition in Rio, kicked off her comeback to the Games with a fantastic beam routine (14.733). But Biles seemed to injure her lower leg during the floor exercise that warmed her up before rotation two. Following a medical staff evaluation, Biles returned to competition, preferring to use her left leg.
With the highest score ever achieved by a gymnast in an international competition this Olympic cycle, Biles finished first in the all-around (59.566). Additionally, Biles placed first on the vault (15.300) and floor (14.600). Currently, Biles is ranked seventh on uneven bars (14.433) and second on beam (14.733).
Biles "felt a little something in her calf" following the competition, according to her coach Cecile Landi, but she had no intention of withdrawing. Landi reported that as the meet went on, Biles started to feel better. Regarding her capacity to compete for the rest of the Games, there are currently no worries.
Hezly Rivera, who is the youngest competitor from the United States in Paris at the age of sixteen, earned marks of 12.633 on the beam and 13.900 on the uneven bars.
Kaylia Nemour, a French-born competitor representing her father's country of Algeria, executed one of the hardest routines ever attempted on uneven bars during the first rotation (7.1 D-score). Nemour is a serious candidate for the individual gold medal after winning the silver medal in the event at the 2023 World Championships. Nemour is now third in the all-around (55.966) and leads the field on uneven bars (15.600).
With a score of 15.066, Qiu Qiyuan from China is ranked second in the event and could be Nemour's strongest rival.
After the fifth subdivision is over, the field for the team, all-around, and individual event finals will be decided.
